Treatment
Where feasible, on your first visit
The consultation may last up to one hour. During this time the chiropractor will take a comprehensive case history and an extensive medical history, and carry out a meticulous examination that includes orthopaedic, neurological, chiropractic and functional performance assessments.
Research indicates that approximately 80% of a diagnosis comes from the history alone: the conversation about your symptoms. It is the part of the consultation where we spend most of our time.
We will ask where your pain is, whether it spreads, what eases or worsens it and whether you have other symptoms such as numbness or weakness. We prefer to start afresh with your story. This lets us confirm what you have already been told, gently amend it, or reassure you where earlier assessments may have caused unnecessary worry.
We also want to understand your lifestyle and, most importantly, what activities you want to return to. That goal becomes our treatment objective.
At the end of the examination you will be given a report of findings.
The working diagnosis: what is wrong, whether it is back pain, neck pain, joint pain or headaches.
The prognosis: what to expect from the treatment plan, and approximate costs.
If chiropractic care is not suitable for you, you will be referred to your GP or the relevant specialist.
Normally, if feasible, treatment can begin on the first visit. Very occasionally, further tests or investigations, such as X-rays, MRI scans and blood tests, are needed to confirm a diagnosis.
Your medical details and information are confidential. No one else will be allowed to see your notes without your permission.
