What is Chiropractic?

A visit to our Chiropractic, Sports and Exercise Rehabilitation Clinics in the City of London or Friern Barnet is more than just talking about your symptoms. It's about giving you the tools to integrate to live a healthier and better quality of life.

When you come in, we'll talk about what is concerning you and find out what the main cause of your problem and then create a plan to help you get on the path to good function and well-being, not just with your physical status but also with your nutrition and your mental health.

The Chiropractic profession

Chiropractic (from the Greek: "Done by hand") is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, in particular of the spine, and the effects of these disorders on the nervous system and general health.
(World Federation of Chiropractic, 2001).

Sports Chiropractic is a specialised chiropractic branch, recognised by FICS (International Sports Chiropractic Federation), that serves as a global multimodal health-care approach for athletes. Its main goal is to prevent injuries and improve performance, benefiting athletes' overall well-being. This holistic care is not exclusive to professionals; it also aids amateur athletes, elite competitors, and master athletes participating in sports later in life.

Poor, inadequate, or incorrect function in the spine can irritate the nerves that control posture and movement. The spinal nerve stresses (which may be caused by factors such as accidents, poor diet, lack of exercise or sports injuries, repetitive activities, poor posture, and anxiety) can lead to symptoms of discomfort such as back pain, neck pain, joint pain, and headaches.

Chiropractic is an effective and safe approach to attaining a healthy spine. To achieve good health, you have to achieve good posture. Forward-leaning head posture is a major problem in our modern society at work and at home. Good posture is as important as exercising and breathing properly, sleeping well, hydrating correctly, and eating adequately. Also, chiropractors can help with other common musculoskeletal conditions.

Chiropractic care involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation or adjustment to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly.
Apart from manipulation, chiropractors may use a variety of manual therapy techniques, including mobilisations, ice, heat, exercises, supportive taping, and electrotherapy, as well as advice about posture and lifestyle.

In the UK, since 2001, the title of 'chiropractor' has been protected by law, and it is a criminal offence, liable to prosecution, to describe oneself as any sort of chiropractor without being registered with the General Chiropractic Council. Today, there are over 30 chiropractic institutions and over 90,000 chiropractors practising in more than 88 countries worldwide, making Chiropractic one of the largest healthcare-regulated professions. In recent years, the World Health Organisation requested the World Federation of Chiropractic to write a report about the status of the profession.
